  • Macerate the hyoscyamus for forty-eiglit liours in' fifteen fluid ounces of the spirit, in a closed vessel, ao-itating occasionally ; then transfer to a percolator ; and when the iiuid ceases to pass, continue the perco- lation with the remaining five ounces of spirit
  • After- wards subject the contents of the percolator to pres- sure, filter the product, mix the two liquids, and add sufficient proof spirit to make one pint
  • of the fresh Leaves and young Branches _ot Hyoscyamus, one hundred and twelve pounds

Method as extracted

  1. Take of Hyoscyamus Leaves, in coarse powder, two ounces and a half;
  2. Macerate the hyoscyamus for forty-eiglit liours in' fifteen fluid ounces of the spirit, in a closed vessel, ao-itating occasionally ; then transfer to a percolator ; and when the iiuid ceases to pass, continue the perco- lation with the remaining five ounces of spirit.
  3. Take of the fresh Leaves and young Branches _ot Hyoscyamus, one hundred and twelve pounds.
  4. Heat the str-ained liquor to 200° to coagulate the albumen, and again filter, Evaporate the filtrate by a water bath to the consis- tence of a thin syrup ; then add to it the green colour- ing matter previously separated, and, stirring the whole assiduously, contmue the evaporation at a tem- perature not exceeding 140°, until the extract is of a suitable consistence for forming pills.
